Lawmakers approved the opening of the country’s first casino – Cyprus

Cyprus is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean endowed with tourist virtues. It particularly appeals to British and the Greek visitors. With a view to attracting more tourists, local lawmakers decided to pass a law that would allow Cyprus’ first casino to operate in the southern part of the island. As a reminder, the Turkey-recognized Northern Cyprus has legalized gaming industry since 1974. The said region is currently home to a panel of gambling establishments of great success. The southern half of the island has been trying to multiply its attempts to legalize the market but the influence of the Orthodox Church has been a real obstacle.

Last Wednesday, 29 assemblymen made an historic step forwards into approving a law that would allow a casino with 100 gaming tables and 1,000 slot machines to legally operate in the region. The gambling establishment in question is expected to open in 2018; local authorities have already joined hands for the completion of the project. As for the government, it plans, among others, to launch a call for tenders in early August to find an operator who could run the casino. Among the potential candidates in the hunt for the license are Las Vegas-based Kerznar and Genting Group. The new casino will be built next to Larnaca, one of the leading tourist destinations in Cyprus.
